Amazon KDP is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to create a passive income stream. There are low barriers to entry, very low starting capital required and it is a legit way of making some extra or even full-time income. However, making the 4 or 6-figure income promised by many bloggers and influencers is not as easy as they make it out to be. To earn that kind of money from self-publishing on Amazon, you will have to work for it…a lot. Therefore, I present to you 4 things that you should consider before starting with Amazon KDP. These will prepare you for what to expect when entering the world of Amazon publishing.

No. 1. It takes lots of your time, energy, and effort to do this as a serious business.

Any business requires time, consistency, and effort. Book publishing is no different.

Book creation and publishing process is easy but difficult at the same time. It is easy if you are not hoping to make a great number of sales.

When pursuing self-publishing in order to earn full-time income, it is a different story. There are a lot of aspects to consider: validating your book niche idea, analysing competition, conducting profitable keyword research, creating high-quality book cover, ensuring that any words/images you use are not copyrighted/trademarked and a lot more. Consider yourself warned.

No. 2. Go in this business with a long-term view only.

If you are hoping that you are going to create a few books in a few days’ time, publish them, sell copies within a few days, and make considerable income, you are wrong. The chances of that happening are slim to none.

The reason for that is super obvious – you are not the only one who is publishing books on Amazon. There are thousands of other people doing the same and many of them are doing it better. It is only natural at the beginning when you are not familiar with the process of book creation and publishing.

The truth is that if you publish around 100 books, you will maybe sell under 10 of these and less than 5 of these you will sell on a regular basis.

It will take time for you to publish a huge amount of books and increase your chances of book sales. That is if you put the effort into every single book you create.

There are also other factors to consider, like, Amazon prioritises books that have been on the system longer. When you publish your book, it will take time for the Amazon algorithm to properly rank your book. Furthermore, it will take you time to learn to do keyword research, design book covers, etc. It’s a learning curve.

For most people, it will take more than 1 year to start earning enough income to cover their living costs. So don’t quit your 9-5 job just yet.

No. 3. Your website is the best marketing tool you can use to promote your books.

Any business has a website. If you consider book creation and publishing a business, why shouldn’t you create a website for it? There are various benefits to having your own website.

These include:

  • Your books reach a larger audience.
  • An educational blog about topics that your books are designed for or about your self-publishing journey will ensure that trust between you and your audience/potential customers is established. People know to who they are giving their money.
  • In addition to your books, you can earn extra income by monetising your website (Google AdSense, affiliate marketing, etc.).
  • You can create a brand. Online presence and brand increase your credibility.
  • Most of the people publishing their books on Amazon KDP don’t have a brand, online presence, or their own website. It is because it takes effort to establish these things. Most people just spam Amazon by publishing low-quality, no-content books and hope to make a buck.  A website will keep you one step ahead of the competition.
  • It makes you less dependent on Amazon. If for some reason you are banned from their program or any other external factors make it impossible to publish on Amazon, you will be left with a loyal customer base at least.

No. 4. If you are banned from Amazon KDP, there is no way back.

Yes, you heard me right. If you violate any Amazon KDP publishing guidelines and get banned, you cannot re-apply. It’s game over for you. Therefore, I cannot stress enough how imperative it is to read and comply with their guidelines and not try to spam or game the system. There are many potential reasons why Amazon can ban you from its publishing program. These will be explored in a separate post and on my Instagram.

I hope that you found some of this information useful and feel prepared for your Amazon KDP journey. For inspiration or interest, check out my books here. Note: This is only a small part of my books, as I post books on my website only if they are related to my main niche.
